According to pitchforkmedia.com, Chicks on Speed’s Alex-Murray Leslie has put together a new 3CD compilation that “celebrates and reclaims music-by-women in several landmark ways”. I have mixed feelings about Chicks on Speed, and I know some of us were burned by the “Women and Songs” series (not to mention the dismal imitators that followed). But Girl Monsteras this compilation is calledlooks pretty stellar. It has an intriguing mix of musicians from a variety of genres and decades, and a bunch of previously unreleased tracks. I haven’t been this excited since the first volume of Alright, This Time Just the Girls!

Ooooooo! Thanks for the heads up! What's the story on Chicks on Speed, I've heard the name but not the music or the controversy.

Chicks on Speed are an artschooly, electro "band" from Munich. To their credit, they do some pretty cool things aside from making music: they design paper clothing, own a few record labels, and create video installations (among other things). Their music does tend to come from a feminist viewpoint, too.
My only real problems with Chicks on Speed is that, outside of a few singles, most of their consciously-trashy electropop wears pretty thin after repeated listens (and the artschool shtick gets boring too). I also can't help but blame every half-decent electro band (Peaches, Ladytron, I'm looking at you!) for inspiring the legions of tiresome imitators. Sometimes a good band requires more than bad-on-purpose dance moves and slutty spandex costumes, youknowwhatImean?
(That said, I am pretty fond of Ladytron)

Did anyone hear about the Chicks On Speed debacle in Spain? According to the CoS bulletin I read, a show they were supposed to play had a low turnout, so the promoters told them they couldn't play, thinking they could claim insurance on a "cancelled" headline act. The Chicks started to play anyway, and according to their bulletin were "physically violated and dragged off stage". Now they're trying to spread the word to keep other performers from going through the same thing. What a world, eh?
