I had the amazing experience today of sitting on a panel at the Converge Collective’s annual conference at Ursula Franklin Academy in Toronto. Converge is a chance for queer artists and activists in the community to meet with LGBT high school students to facilitate discussion, workshops and learning. The energy around the event is phenomenal and I was really blessed to be in the company of so many fantastic creators and performers and inspiring young people. Converge is organized solely by volunteers, so it’s amazing to see the results.
Among the presenters was the star of a brand new take on the Dove campaign that’s been widely debated on this very blog. Created by 26-year-old filmmaker Daina Hodgson, the film is an amusing but very meaningful look at both the controversial campaign and the way we perceive ourselves. At the end, it asks the question “Who defines you and why do you listen?”
I highly recommend checking it out. Click here to see the video.

Haha! I like the way it says REVOLT at the end.
PS I'm happy that you're back Stacey May! You were so quiet for a while!

This is kind of neither here nor there, but it's interesting (and a bit scary-making) how the film can be and is interpreted in more than one way. I thought it was a pretty funny, queer-informed comment on gender construction and perfomance, but based on the comments posted on YouTube, some other folks seemed to be reading it as a warning to men of how any hot woman you see could potentially be a MAN, which would make you a HOMOSEXUAL (gasp). Which is, I think, really not the point at all.
Funny how these things get all blurry at times.

but based on the comments posted on YouTube...
And this is where I pull out the standard response to anyone taking YouTube comments seriously. (a bit of profanity—gee, kinda like YouTube)

Yes, I should have added as an addendum that whenever I feel like making myself depressed and frightened about the state of the world and the rampant half-brained kneejerk racism/sexism/homophobia and lowest-common-denominator criticism, I go to YouTube.
Which is why YouTube is such a fascinating experiment in the circulation of material culture. Oops, did I say "fascinating"? I meant "LOL, LMAO!!!!"
