In this installment: upon examining Unilever‘s conflicting brands and marketing tactics, the ad industry discovers there’s something strange afoot!
Apparently there’s a bit of a controversy about the Dove vs. Axe advertising contradictions, which we’ve been discussing on this blog for quite some time. I wonder what will happen when industry-types start calling out Dove for its disingenuousness?
In it’s defence, the company stated that “The Axe campaign is a spoof of ‘mating game’ and men’s desire to get noticed by women and not meant to be taken literally… Unilever is a large, global company with many brands in its portfolio. Each brand’s efforts are tailored to reflect the unique interests and needs of its audience.” I’m not quite sure that marketing-speak is going to convince people this time.

The spoof-excuse does not go far when Dove's Onslaught video shows image after image of sexually objectified women, and asks us to talk to our daughters about it. How exactly is an 8-year-old supposed to discern between "real" and "spoof" images?
How does anyone?

Whoo, finally! The one thing that irks me about this is that people are arguing Dove is hypocritical because the Axe ads are so sexist, while the Onslaught ad has a meaningful, pro-self-esteem message behind it. As I've said before, I really did not think Onslaught had any sort of positive, empowering message behind it...but I've gone on about that enough.
I also didn't realise until I read those links that Unilever also owns Sunsilk, which have awful ads that I was quite fixated on while I was writing my book about ladies hating ladies - the logo for Sunsilk is a blonde woman and a brunette woman trying to beat each other up. Yick. I'm going to say no thanks to Unilever.

Here's Jennifer Wells' take in the Toronto Star. It sounds like she's been reading this here blog:
