The daytime television show “The View” has long been famous for the “problematic” opinions of a few of its co-hosts (see here and here and here) and this discussion around gender roles and children is no exception. Though I have to say - every time one of these clips pops up on the internet, I like Whoopi Goldberg more and more.

I think that Barbara Walter's hour long special on trans children was thoughtful and really respectful...

The case of a boy who KNOWS that dresses are generally worn by girls and wears one anyway is different from the boy who really doesn't see the difference in boy/girl dressing in my mind. In the case of a truly confused kid (and I really don't think there are that many kids who are truly confused about such societal expectations) a cue from an adult may correct a misperseption, it seems to me. Otherwise, the vast majority of kids, I would assume, are just finding a new way to joke around, which is harmless. If not, parents are left with a lot of responcibility. What is the best way to protect and yet keep childhood a time of innocents? This seems to be what the discussion is really about, but it becomes a bit of a free-for-all and gets into adult issues and personal attacks far too fast. The "not under my roof" woman never makes the distinction between confusion and choise/preference/personality. Were she forced to place her views this way, she minght be confused , contradict herself or appear to change her mind. Her conservative sentiments don't seem set in stone to me. Very interesting!
