V writes about her new-found (and conflicted) addiction to make-up: fear of having to “put her face on”; what make-up means to her gender presentation; and the looming threat of the make-up police.

Much like your friend, I shunned it for years and just started wearing it "full time" very recently in my day-to-day life. (Not counting fun dressing up time or going out and wanting to be shimmery.)
I don't know why I began. It's not a peer pressure thing; most gals I know don't wear very much if any.
I just feel more "put together" with it on. This does concern me, because the more I wear it, the more I feel awkward without it.
Slippery slope?

growing up black in a suburb that was 99% white and east asian, i never felt like i was adequately feminine or pretty to even bother (my attitude was basically "makeup + ugly = still ugly"). now that i'm older and more confident i feel like i can claim girliness and frivolity on my own terms-- having fun with makeup sometimes but not being chained to it.
i don't like makeup that looks natural. if i wanted to look natural, i wouldn't wear makeup! i like makeup that draws attention to how artificial it is--bright colours, eyelashes that are much too long, glittery bronzer, and so forth.
