David Frost Acquitted

Last Friday, David Frost was acquitted of all four counts of sexual exploitation. He had been accused of manipulating his former players and their teenage girlfriends into group sex.

Christie Blatchford of the Globe and Mail weighs in on the trial with a superbly inquisitive column.

She writes:

How curious that at the just-ended criminal trial of former junior coach and National Hockey League-accredited player agent David Frost, it was, to use the lexicon of the national game, the girls who had the biggest balls.

News Flash, Race and Racism
CSIS being racist once again

I couldn’t think of a better title to adequately demonstrate my disdain at having to write about this.

Not that I didn’t know this was happening or am at all surprised that the news is finally surfacing. Mostly I’m just still angry and using my sarcasm here to move through these feelings.

As reported in the Globe and Mail:

“Over the past 18 months, CSIS [Canadian Security & Intelligence Service] agents have approached several people with ties to the Kahnawá:ke Mohawk reserve south of Montreal and invited them to clandestine meetings.

According to the Mohawks who spoke to CSIS, the spies wanted information on native groups leading blockades in Ontario and were trying to assess the strength of political and religious factions within Mohawk communities. The spies said they did similar work in native communities across the country, raising the possibility that dozens of aboriginal groups are being assessed as potential threats to Canada’s national security.”

My favourite part? Two things. Apparently the former CSIS director Reid Morden said he was “surprised to hear the spy agency is targeting natives”.

Yeah.
Right.

Oh, and they were “dissapointed” to find out that Thomas Deer, a graphic design artist from Kahnawá:ke, didn’t know Shawn Brant from Tyendinaga, since he apparently contributes stuff to Indigenous sovereignty-seeking websites.

For real? Like we all send smoke signals the other way to find out what’s going on with each other? There’s over a million of us in Canada alone!

Oh, ignorant racism. When will you ever go away?

Women Won’t Forget (and hopefully, neither will anyone else)

Women Won't Forget

Saturday December 6th is the National Day of Action and Remembrance on Violence Against Women.

Women Won’t Forget invite you to attend our annual candlelight vigil on Saturday, December 6 at 6 pm at Philosopher’s Walk, University of Toronto (path off Bloor St. between the Royal Ontario Museum and the Royal Conservatory of Music). We gather to remember the fourteen women who were killed in Montreal as well as the women who have been killed since then because of male violence. The Vigil consists of a native healing ceremony, speakers and performers and ends with the laying of roses. Everyone is welcome. Ceremony proceeds regardless of the weather.

For more information call 416.762.8798 or visit www.womenwontforget.org

The aim of Women Won’t Forget is to heighten awareness of the continuing and pervasive extent of abuse against women in our society and to encourage and support efforts to end it. Since 1989, we have met to tell the stories of those women who can no longer speak for themselves. Our permanent memorial consists of 14 red oak trees, a granite boulder and a memorial plaque.

lederhosen who?

Krista Muir has been a mainstay on the Montreal music scene for more than a decade now. She’s probably best known for her off-the-wall, food-obsessed, fashionista Teutonic alter-ego Lederhosen Lucil, a blonde-braided German uber-hostess who’s been known to bust out songs that sound like a cooking show set to Casio keyboard sample tunes. But of late, we’ve been getting a chance to see the woman under the wig and hosen; Muir has just released an album under her own name called Accidental Railway, and it’s full of tender songwriting gems.

This sweet video for the track Leave Alight, from the new album, was directed by Kara Blake and features Muir’s skills on the baritone ukelele. It’s kind of a masterpiece of simplicity, IMHO.

And oh, just for the heck of it, here is a video for Lederhosen Lucil’s Semi-Sweet after the cut.

Thanksgiving means…

It’s Thanksgiving day for our neighbours next door in the United States.

Thanksgiving comes with a lot of historical baggage of course around colonization, the pilgrims, etc, but a lot of people have taken it back as simply a day to be thankful. That’s up to you to decide.

Watch this cool video from Longhouse Media with youth from the Swinomish, Lummi and Muckleshoot Nations talk about what Thanksgiving means to them.

So what does it mean to you?

Sarah Campbell: She’s All The Rage

Every Thursday I profile a new incredible woman, each from a different walk of life. Different professions, causes, backgrounds, ethnicities, orientations, and anything/everything else!

So without further delay, let me introduce the indie empowered Sarah Campbell…

Sarah Campbell

Sarah Campbell is the sort of person anyone can talk to. And that is one of the things that makes her the perfect lady to own and operate The Rage in Toronto, a super-funky store full of creations by independent designers. Recognizing the need to support artists and provide “people with an alternative to mainstream companies”, Sarah tells us a thing or two about independence, patience, and those $10 jeans you may no longer want to buy.
