Plush pigs and kyriarchy: Why I love Thea Lim

January 6th, 2009     by piKe krpan     Comments

The Toronto Rape Crisis Centre / Multicultural Women against Rape has been hosting a series of herstory (instead of history) events designed to recount our stories, remember our common purpose, embrace the activist in all of us, and to redefine feminism on our own terms. All of these reasons to get together sounded noble, so off I went. Plus, it was just fun to see Thea Lim get interviewed by a lovely, well-worn pink plushy pig … READ MORE

Step One: Dress Up. Step Two: Dance Slow.

November 25th, 2008     by piKe krpan     Comments

Our friends at Worn Journal are launching their new issue #7 this Saturday November 29 in Toronto with style, as per usual! The new issue includes articles on mannequin history, global fashion, luxury branding, and spandex! You may remember Shameless reviewer Erin Elliott had this to say about Worn’s issue #5 in an older print issue of Shameless: Discovering Montreal’s Worn Fashion Journal is as refreshing as trading in sweaty wool socks for liberating flip flops on the … READ MORE

Have you heard of this amazing collective? Big up to the Medina Collective, an organization “dedicated to empowering young women of colour to challenge mass media messages by exploring hip hop, pop culture, media and education. Algonquin resistance in Barriere Lake continues

November 23rd, 2008     by piKe krpan     Comments

A few weeks ago I blogged about the horrific piece in the Globe and Mail by Margaret Wente. Squeezed in at the bottom was a quick reference and video link to what has been going on for the Algonquins of the northern Quebec community of Barriere Lake, following Jessica’s astute post on racism in that community. Please, I urge you to look at this video again. After exhausting all political avenues, the Algonquins of Barriere Lake … READ MORE

    Hallowe’en: trick and treat culture

October 31st, 2008     by piKe krpan     Comments

I want to point your attention to Thea’s great post on racism at Hallowe’en over at Racialicious: “Mainstream North American culture likes to define itself as cultureless, but Halloween is a very cultural practice. Not only is it a little weird (Just look at it from the point of view of an outsider. Send your kids out to strangers’ houses and tell them to ask for candy? Decorate your house like a graveyard? Dress up like … READ MORE

    Not just dumb, but racist

October 25th, 2008     by piKe krpan     Comments

I have never liked Margaret Wente’s work in the Globe and Mail. In fact, I find her on her best days to be stridently conservative, and on her worst days, simply boring. But today, she wrote something completely unacceptable. I’m sitting here in shock, reading it over. Her opinion piece in the Globe and Mail describes how high-profile Olympics official Dick Pound, who called the Canada of 400 years ago “a country of savages”, … READ MORE

Testimony from largest anti-Palin rally in Alaska

October 2nd, 2008     by piKe krpan     Comments

Just in case there was any doubt, here is what many women are feeling about Sarah Palin, the person to not vote for just because she is a woman. This is a testimony from one woman: The Alaska Women Reject Palin rally was to be held outside on the lawn in front of the Loussac Library in midtown Anchorage . Home made signs were encouraged, and the idea was to make a statement that Sarah Palin … READ MORE

crisis in opportunity: naomi klein on disaster capitalism

September 30th, 2008     by piKe krpan     Comments

Beyond my requisite Women’s Studies viewing of Marilyn Waring’s Who’s Counting: Sex, Lies and Global Economics (which is kick-ass), I hate economics. Economy talk makes me mad. It’s because pundits talk about it as if it’s something more precious than life itself. Same with the market. Or capital. I like my political talk to start and end with living beings and their rights to live, work, and die with dignity. Ok, ok, I’m also intimidated by … READ MORE

    Take it Back

September 28th, 2008     by piKe krpan     Comments

Wow, there were so many women and transwomen at Take Back the Night last night here in Toronto. Women sang a capella of freedom, told their herstories in multiple languages, gave testimony of their rape or experience of genocide, shared success stories of ending violence in their lives, read out their frustrations with feminist movements, talked of creative collaborations on the amazing giant puppet that accompanied us, and kids held lanterns high. My bum was … READ MORE

    keeping track of the monthlies

August 7th, 2008     by piKe krpan     Comments

My life is way too busy to remember when I’m going to get my period. And at this time of the year, when I’m jetting off to the woods for a few days of camping or going on long road trips, it is a mega pain when I forget that I’m going to bleed and I have to bunch my socks into my underwear to catch the flow. Never again! Check out Mon.thly.Info, a handy online … READ MORE

    Manipulating Young Women in Crisis

July 12th, 2008     by piKe krpan     Comments

When I was a young teenager, I had a pregnancy scare. So of course i went to a crisis pregnancy centre to get the test before I wanted to come clean to my mom or my doctor that I was having sex at a pretty young age. I didn’t have a very open and communicative relationship about my sexuality with any adult and I was leaps and bounds ahead of all my friends in terms … READ MORE

If I wasn’t chained to the Toronto ‘burbs for the next month pet-sitting, I would be at the Allied Media Conference in Detriot from June 20-22. And, of course, I would offer to take all of you with me! Check out the program, which is all that the Women, Action and the Media conference that I attended in March (sadly) couldn’t be. They’ve got sessions like Transporting Silenced Voices Through Interviews For Film/Video, Revolutionary Parenting, Women … READ MORE

Today’s the (not so) big apology

June 11th, 2008     by piKe krpan     Comments

Today’s the day that Stephen Harper is scheduled to apologize for the horrors of the residential schools where Aboriginal peoples in Canada were imprisoned for decades, creating generations of abuse and also of survival. The apology is scheduled for 3pm today in the House of Commons and you can watch it online livestream on the CBC here. For me, the government’s apology comes too late to be meaningful. It isn’t happening in concert with acknowledging the multiple … READ MORE

Dunkin’ Donuts draws the line on celebrity keffiyehs

May 28th, 2008     by piKe krpan     Comments

Shameless writer Zahra Rasul just sent me a link to this article about Dunkin Donuts pulling a TV ad with Rachael Ray. The celebrity donut-hawker is wearing a scarf that looks “too Palestinian.” And here I was worried that once Mary Kate Olsen wore one, the keffiyeh became a depoliticized and empty symbol of vapid celebrity! I guess it still has symbolic power when it is draped around the neck of someone whose doesn’t … READ MORE
