    “Ladies beware” - of everything

August 7th, 2007     by piKe krpan     Comments

At work today my co-worker, a well-meaning and wonderful woman, asked me to watch a special video clip on the dangers of some type of breast cancer with her. I was feeling unwilling. Not because I wanted to be ignorant (although some days I do want to bury my head in the sand), but because I was healthily suspicious. My suspicions bore out. The video clip was actually a short news segment from a local television news … READ MORE

time travel and redemption! YA! new book by Sherman Alexie

July 25th, 2007     by piKe krpan     Comments

ok everyone I just read the most amazing book! I devoured it in a day and a half. The novel is called Flight, and it’s by Sherman Alexie, one of my favourite writers. 15-year-old Zits, a Indian kid stuck in a cycle of foster homes, jail, and the streets, is at the brink and ready to do something really stupid with his anger. I mean really stupid. But suddenly he is catapulted through time to inhabit … READ MORE

I can’t believe Toronto’s queer writer and organizer extraordinaire Debra Anderson… she is a powerhouse planner with her queer reading series Get Your Lit Out (disclosure: she also writes for Shameless!!!). She told me she was busy putting together a star line-up for the next reading, on June 20, but I had no idea it was going to be this good… and it’s free! Here’s who’s reading: Shani Mootoo Trey Anthony Anna Camilleri Debra Anderson Gein Wong Dani Couture and the event is … READ MORE

Heartbreaker reading Feb 22 and why I hate V Day

February 19th, 2007     by piKe krpan     Comments

Last week saw the unfortunate passing of Valentine’s Day. I hate Valentine’s Day. People I have dated will say it is because I have a penchant for unsentimentality, that I am unromantic, and that I am a bit of a love party pooper. (Well, the ones who are still bitter would likely say these things.) A few days before the “big” night of the 14th, I went to a yearly literary party (we usually get … READ MORE

Rosovaya - marching for those who can’t

June 25th, 2006     by piKe krpan     Comments

Hi everyone, Pride Weekend is fully underway in Toronto and there is the usual corporate mess of advertisements. But at yesterday’s Dyke March, our queer community continued to make the march a political event. Everywhere I saw shirts that read “rosovaya” - which is “pink” in Russian and slang for lesbian. The back of the shirts read “Marching for those who can’t - Moscow 2006.” At the end of May 2006 Moscow struggled to hold its first-ever … READ MORE

PORNOGRAPHY FOR FEMINISTS? IS IT POSSIBLE?

June 3rd, 2006     by piKe krpan     Comments

Over the past few weeks, I have been helping out a friend whose girlfriend broke up with him because she feels that he has an unhealthy relationship with porn. (Well, there were other reasons too, but this was big for her.) She has been sending him anti-porn links about how addictive and dangerous porn is, how relationships are weakened by unrealistic sexual expectations created by watching porn, and of course, the mainstay: that porn is … READ MORE

    Hip hop gets queered up

May 24th, 2006     by piKe krpan     Comments

Hi everyone! This is my first post! So cool to be a part of Shameless. My name’s piKe. Nice to meet you. OK, I just got blown away by a film last weekend showing at Toronto’s Inside Out Gay and Lesbian Film and Video Festival, which runs until this coming Sunday. For those folks who still think that hip hop is just about 50 Cent and Eminem, you gotta get underground. The genre lends itself to … READ MORE
