    The Other Side Of Censorship

September 19th, 2008     by Stacey May Fowles     Comments

QuillBlog has an interesting piece up titled “Two takes on censorship,” which briefly explores how the media interprets the censoring of books based on context. They look at two recent cases of “a small group of people imposing their values on a much larger group” that speak for themselves: Responding to complaints by a Muslim creationist that “its contents were defamatory and blasphemous,” a Turkish court has banned Internet users from viewing Richard Dawkins’ website. Meanwhile, … READ MORE

    Because Engineers Don’t have Sex?

September 18th, 2008     by Stacey May Fowles     Comments

So I hate abstinence only education, and I am always grateful that teens have other (better) options available to them. Because let’s face it, sometimes the abstinence only people don’t make a ton of sense. Rumour has it this billboard is over a decade old, but have things really changed all that much? Bitch Needs Your Help

September 16th, 2008     by Stacey May Fowles     Comments

I felt like it was really important to post this video for a number of reasons. The obvious one is that the wonderful Bitch Magazine is more than worth saving - in fact, Bitch is not only the reason that magazines like Shameless exist, but it’s also the reason that feminists like me exist. The first issue of Bitch was published in January 1996 and the mag has acted as “a feminist response to pop … READ MORE

UPDATE: This event has been cancelled. A message from The Young Greens of Canada: “A majority of Canadians want to see Elizabeth May in the national televised debates. But the decision has been made to keep her out. So the Young Greens have decided to do something about it. There will be a rally and march in Toronto on Friday afternoon. We will be taping our mouths shut to symbolise the silencing of Elizabeth. Here’s the schedule (Friday, September 12): noon-12:30pm - Meet at … READ MORE

    Et tu, Toronto Star?

September 9th, 2008     by Stacey May Fowles     Comments

Witness the stellar journalism that is today’s Toronto Star analysis of Michelle Obama and Cindy McCain’s fashion sense: Accessible style vs. expensive tastes: Designers at New York Fashion Week say they would rather dress Michelle Obama than Cindy McCain Thank goodness that someone is writing about Cindy’s “saucy updo,” because we all know that’s vital to the political discourse. … READ MORE

    Young, Queer and Creative?

September 9th, 2008     by Stacey May Fowles     Comments

Jessica wrote earlier this month about a great production going on at Buddies in Bad Times in Toronto, so I thought I’d throw in a mention about their Queer Youth Arts Program. Buddies Queer Youth Programme invites all queer-identified youth ages 15 to 25 to take part in their weekly Wednesday night events. Between September and June, you can take workshops with some of Canada’s finest theatre artists, see shows on Buddies mainstage, and get onstage yourself … READ MORE

    Dance Break

September 8th, 2008     by Stacey May Fowles     Comments

Partly because it’s Monday and I worked too much today. Partly because I’m psyched that there’s no semi-clad-dancing-girl-accessories in this video. And even if it ruins my “I listen to bands that don’t even exist yet” indie-cred, partly because I can’t get this song out of my head. But mostly because “Before he speak his suit bespoke” is a damn good lyric. And after you have your dance break, read A Feminist Critique of Pop Media’s September 2007 … READ MORE

Mother Jones Tackles The Luxury of Choice

September 8th, 2008     by Stacey May Fowles     Comments

There’s a great online piece over at Mother Jones about Sarah Palin’s pro-life “choices” titled “The Luxury of True Reproductive Choice.” The article gives a little much needed perspective on how Palin’s pro-life stance is an easy one for her to take given her socio-economic status and the insured health care choices that accompany that. It also spells out what a victory for the Republicans will likely mean for reproductive policy in the US. Here’s … READ MORE

Getting Tricked by the warm fuzzies

September 4th, 2008     by Stacey May Fowles     Comments

In my household we yell out the word “tricked” every time we watch a televsion ad that makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside, only to find out in the end that it’s for an SUV, a soft drink, or some equally bad corporate product that is likely contributing to the destruction of humanity. Give me a good tune and some heartwarming imagery and bam! I feel hope, joy, bliss, choked up and then … READ MORE

    Community Organizing

September 4th, 2008     by Stacey May Fowles     Comments

I watched the Republican National Convention last night and the way the term “Community Organizer” was tossed around repeatedly like a condescending insult made me really uncomfortable. And angry. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, Vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin said this last night, in reference to Obama’s perceived inexperience: “I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.” Isn’t community organizing pretty … READ MORE

“Try Loving Your Itty Bitty Titties.”

September 3rd, 2008     by Stacey May Fowles     Comments

A few years back I was lucky enough to get a screener of Itty Bitty Titty Committee, a film by the director of But I’m A Cheerleader, and the producers of D.E.B.S. (Also two great teen films that deal with queer issues.) Now the film is out on DVD and I recommend everyone give it a viewing. From the release: This latest fabulous movie from Jamie Babbit is a dynamic, romantic, frequently funny and politically astute … READ MORE
