Monthly Music Musings: Perfect Pussy

There is something refreshing to me about the integrity a band must have in calling themselves, “Perfect Pussy.”
Hailing from Syracuse, New York, noise-punk band Perfect Pussy formed as a “fake band” featured in indie film, Adult World and enjoyed playing with each other so much that they continued on after the filming, and released a four-track cassette, I have lost all desire for feeling in 2013.

This release became well-known for its noisy quality, with singer Meredith Graves’ voice buried underneath waves of reverby guitars, as well as lyrical precision with lyrics like:

“I’m a real piece of shit/ I’m a real lost cause/ dare to act like you’re surviving and get thrown to the dogs/ every dog deserves forgiveness no matter who he bit/ I’m a real lost cause/ I’m a real piece of shit” (“IV”- I have lost all desire for feeling).

This cassette built the band a load of music-blog buzz on CMJ and Pitchfork, landing them numerous shows in the US, as well as a spot on this year’s South by South West music festival roster.

Perfect Pussy (very) recently released their first full-length album, Say Yes to Love on March 18. Similar to the songs on I have lost all desire for feeling, singer Meredith Graves’ lyrics deal with personal issues—in fact, the record is so personal that the special edition vinyl is laced with Graves’ menstrual blood.

And yet, despite the seemingly dark nature of this record, Say Yes to Love delivers 23 fast minutes of catchy riffs that make me want to say “Fuck off” to all of my feelings of inadequacy and get on with my day.
