rabble.ca Internships!

Interested in interning at Canada’s awesome, progressive news website, rabble.ca? They’re hiring!

rabble.ca is one of the success stories of Canadian independent journalism, publishing news and columns by some of the best writers of the left, and providing exposure to new writers. rabble.ca hosts one of the most dynamic discussion boards in the country: babble (www.rabble.ca/babble). Five years ago, rabble.ca launched the ever-expanding rabble podcast network (www.rabble.ca/rpn) as well as the rabble book lounge complete with reviews, an online book store, book events listings and more (www.rabble.ca/lounge), and in 2008 we launched rabbletv! Since its inception in 2001, rabble’s readership has grown by leaps and bounds while maintaining a loyal core readership: we have 130,000 monthly visitors who read more than eight million pages each month. rabble.ca is an incorporated not-for-profit organization.

rabble.ca is currently seeking volunteer editorial interns – please see descriptions of each below. Applications are limited to one per candidate. Applications are due Thursday, October 21, 2010.

As rabble operates in a virtual office environment, interns may be located anywhere in the country and will work from home; positions run through April 2010. (Note that only successful applicants will be contacted for interviews.) Candidates for the internship positions described below should have the following qualifications: * Familiarity with rabble.ca; * High level of responsibility, ability to meet deadlines and to work independently and with accuracy and attention to detail; * Awareness of current affairs and of social justice movements; * Experience in working in a virtual environment preferable.

Internship 1: News writing and editing The successful candidate will work one-on-one with rabble editors and participate in some of the daily tasks involved in producing the site. In addition, the candidate will be expected to pitch news stories, take regular news-writing assignments and work with the editor to prepare the articles for publication. The news intern will also gain experience in research and fact-checking. Strong writing, editing and research skills are a must, as are an interest in current affairs and the ability to meet quick deadlines. Youwill also be responsible for the online events listing and assist the editor on administrative and other tasks as required. Time commitment required: 10 to 12 hours per week; location of supervising editor: B.C. Your location is not important but your access to the internet and ability to meet regularly by Skype, IM or telephone is essential. Internship 2: Blogging and books The blogging and books intern will have the opportunity to take part in every aspect of the production of rabble’s blogs and books sections from learning about the art of blogging; curating news, campus and books-focused blogs; and contributing to the radio book lounge. You will also be responsible for the online events listing and assist the editor on administrative and other tasks as required. Time commitment required: 10 to 12 hours per week; location of supervising editor: B.C. Your location is not important but your access to the Internet and ability to meet regularly by Skype, IM or telephone is essential. Internship 2: the rabble podcast network If you are enthusiastic about audio, radio and podcast production, news and current affairs, and you want to be part of creating a stable, strong and independent media in Canada – well, you could be the next rpn intern! As an intern at the rabble podcast network, you will spend eight hours a week working with the rpn’s executive producer mixing and hosting podcasts, scouting material, conceiving promotional ideas for the network, and sending out a weekly newsletter to the rpn mailing list.

You will have the opportunity to produce original material, learn audio editing skills (or hone the ones you have), and to work closely with a group of committed media producers and journalists at one of Canada’s most innovative media websites. Your location is not important but your access to the Internet and ability to meet regularly by Skype, IM or telephone is essential.
