Shministim Speak Out

January 26th, 2009     by Anna Leventhal     Comments

When it comes to conflict in Israel and Palestine, it’s easy to fall into thinking in terms that are very black and white. Mainstream media often presents stories without a lot of diversity of opinion, so we’re often left imagining that only two sides exist: Israel vs. Palestine, Arabs vs. Jews, Us vs. Them, with the only possible outcome being total war. So videos like this one are a rare and refreshing glimpse into a struggle that reminds us that there are people on both sides taking risks and working for peace.

The Shministim are a group of Israeli conscientious objectors, high school students who refuse to do their mandatory service in the Israeli army after graduation on ethical grounds. In doing so they face imprisonment. Read more about it on the Shministim website.
