CB & Rihanna: Love Gone Wrong on MuchMusic

February 24th, 2009     by Tuval Dinner     Comments

It seems like every celebrity focused magazine and website is still obsessing over this story. This week MuchMusic is doing a half hour special about the topic of violence against women, specifically in relation to this celebrity incident. I was part of the taping and I am really interested in how the piece is edited together. I had a lot of issues with the direction MuchMusic took the discussion but overall I’m glad they’re using … READ MORE

    Who’s that girl?

December 12th, 2008     by Tuval Dinner     Comments

Folks, at the Shameless party this week I realized that I had made an assumption. I thought that everybody knew the awesomeness that is Robyn. Some of you may remember Robyn from the mid-nineties when she was teen pop sensation. I recently discovered that Robyn is back and she is now in full control of her music career and delivering seriously wicked songs about independence, gender and general good stuff. Here’s two of my favourites but I … READ MORE

    Beyonce Knowles All

November 13th, 2008     by Tuval Dinner     Comments

I’ve only watched this video once but I felt really moved by it. If nothing else it seems to be asking those of us who are heterosexual to just think about our partners, think about the effects our actions have on our relationships and to think about what its like in someone else’s shoes. You can’t go wrong with that, can you? … READ MORE

    Advertisers -1 Billion: Us - 4

August 7th, 2008     by Tuval Dinner     Comments

This news is a year old but its new to me. Sao Paolo, the world’s 4th biggest city, banned most forms of outdoor advertising in January of 2007. After a little research I found out that four US states (Vermont, Alaska, Hawaii, and Maine) also have bans on billboards. Shameless has been doing a lot of writing about about the advertising world’s negative portrayals of women (here, here, and here). Is this kind of ban a … READ MORE

    When Men Cry

August 5th, 2008     by Tuval Dinner     Comments

A couple of British media sources have been running articles lately related to masculinity. One of them is from the BBC and is a list of 10 things that make men weep in public. I’ve been interested in this for years. I am so curious about how it is often the most macho of public figures that are unpunished for crying. For example, professional athletes are often seen crying on or off the sports field. But … READ MORE

    Once

March 28th, 2008     by Tuval Dinner     Comments

This movie has been getting a lot of buzz lately and that usually means I probably won’t see it. But on the insistence of my most trusted movie critic friends I took the plunge. Its hard to write about this film without spoiling some of its gentle power but I’ll try my best. The first thing I would say is don’t watch the trailer. As with most trailers it tries to sell a different idea of … READ MORE

    Feminist Currency

March 24th, 2008     by Tuval Dinner     Comments

It’s not every day I see a $50 bill. But last week an ATM spat one out at me. I was extremely surprised to see the following three things… A representation of the statue of the Famous Five that can be seen on the Olympic Plaza in Calgary, Alberta, and on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. The Famous Five are Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung, Irene Parlby, Henrietta Muir Edwards, and Louise McKinney. These women triumphed in the … READ MORE

    Movie Magic

February 29th, 2008     by Tuval Dinner     Comments

I know I’ve mentioned this film before but now I’ve actually seen it! Yesterday I joined about 100 high school students, their teachers and a small number of other adults at the Revue for a screening of A Winter’s Tale followed by a Q + A with two of the film’s actors. I had expected this film to be a poorly made but very well-intentioned piece of social commentary. What I actually experienced was an amazing … READ MORE

    Fighting Back

February 27th, 2008     by Tuval Dinner     Comments

I haven’t seen this story anywhere in the mainstream media…Any ideas as to why that is? From Pajamas Media: Iranian Shoppers Riot Against Modesty Police It happens every day on the streets of Tehran: a police squad grabbed a young woman for dressing immodestly. But this time, the young woman fought back, and a crowd defended her and attacked the police. At approximately 7 pm on Saturday, February 23, the Ershad patrol, modesty police assigned to enforce clothing … READ MORE

    Sneaky!

February 13th, 2008     by Tuval Dinner     Comments

Has anyone heard of Bill C-484? Its a sneaky bugger. Basically the bill is using the high profile murder of several pregnant Canadian women last year to bolster the anti-choice movement. The bill aims to give the unborn legal protection from violence. At first I found this very confusing. Of course I don’t think a fetus should be exposed to murderous violence. That’s obvious. But the reality is that in the 30+ states south of our … READ MORE

January 25th, 2008     by Tuval Dinner     Comments

I’m a lucky guy. As part of my job this week I was creating a workshop for teens about images of masculinity in the media. Someone I know from the school board asked me if I’d seen Byron Hurt’s documentary, “Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes” because they now had a copy if I wanted to check it out. Well…I’ve been wanting to see this film since I first heard about it a couple of … READ MORE

    Searching…

November 23rd, 2007     by Tuval Dinner     Comments

I’ve been wanting to watch this movie since I heard about it a couple of years ago but never seemed to be in the right place at the right time. Last night I finally made it happen. “Searching for Angela Shelton” is a curious film that is never quite what you think its going to be. This is one woman’s quest but she takes a lot of other people along for the ride. Angela Shelton (the … READ MORE
