That’s right: it’s been ten years since Nicole Cohen and Melinda Mattos launched Shameless. Ten years of talking back has involved an enormous amount of volunteer work and support from our community of writer, illustrators, volunteers, readers and other supporters, and we’re so grateful to everyone who has been part of the journey so far!

Now it’s time to take stock, celebrate our ten years (party alert!) of incredible achievements, and look toward the future. As a 100% volunteer-run organization, we rely on the support of subscribers, advertisers, and donors to make our work possible.

Want to join the growing community of Shameless supporters? We want you to join us, too! Here are ten ways you can support Shameless. (There are also some ways to win prizes, so read on!)

Don’t forget: our 10-year anniversary hashtag is #Shameless10!

  1. Subscribe!
Subscribers provide our core support base. For only $15/year in Canada, you get three issues of Shameless. It’s the best deal around!
Check it: all new and renewing subscribers from October 1 to November 14 will be automatically entered into a prize draw!

  2. Join the Hall of Shameless and become part of our group of sustainers working to ensure Shameless can continue.
Consider donating $10/month: not only will you receive an on-going subscription to Shameless and free entry to all Shameless events, but your contribution does more than you may realize!
One person donating $10/month alone fuels four editorial collective meetings per year ($30/meeting).
If ten people donate $10/month, we could pay an honorarium to nearly all contributors for one issue each year ($1,355/issue).
Forty people donating $10/month would fund the printing of one issue each year ($4,800/issue).
    Help us think big!
That’s not all: all new Hall of Shameless members will have a chance to win prizes. Already a Hall of Shameless member? Refer a friend and have them get in touch to let us know you referred them, and you’ll be entered, too.

  3. Make a one-time donation.
If an on-going commitment isn’t for you, consider making a single donation. Even a $10 or $20 donation helps us with postage, supplies and transportation to events.

  4. Share Shameless with a friend.
When you’ve finished reading your copy, pass it on! Encourage friends and family to read the magazine and check out the website. Getting the word out helps us grow. Maybe they’ll decide to get their own subscription or buy one for someone in their life!

  5. Read the blog and engage in conversations.
Our bloggers and blog editors work hard to produce fresh, timely content and love to know you’re reading. Consider leaving a comment on a blog entry, and share what you’re reading with your own networks.

  6. Say hi on social media.
Did you know Shameless is on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr and even ello? We love when readers and supporters say hello and let us know what we should be following. Of course, we love your re-tweets and links to our content, too!
The hashtag for our 10-year anniversary is #Shameless10.

  7. Come to a launch party or say hi at a tabling event.
If you’re in the Toronto area, keep an eye out on our blog and social networks for news about upcoming events. Many are free (especially for youth) or low-cost. We sometime attend and table at events in other locations, too! You’ll find us next at the Toronto Queer Zine Fair, at the Hamilton Feminist Zine Fair, and at Canzine in Toronto.

  8. Donate your already-enjoyed issues to a school or youth group.
Make sure you contact someone first to ensure your donation would be welcomed.

  9. Volunteer with us!
We maintain a database of casual volunteers that we call on to help us out at events, with transcribing and proofreading. If you are interested in being added to this mailing list, drop us a line to let us know your interests and location, and we’ll go from there.
If you’re specifically interested in pitching writing or art, please read our guidelines here.

  10. Attend our 10-year anniversary gala, and nominate oppressive and problematic media for the Shamie Awards.
If you are a supporter over 19, join us at our 10-year anniversary gala and launch of the Shamie Awards on November 14, 2014. It’s gonna be a blast!
Whether you’re joining us or not, please help us build the Shamies by nominating oppressive and problematic media for our satirical award show. All nominators are eligible for a grand prize!
