March 26th, 2008     by Thea Lim     Comments

The Miss G______ Project for Equity in Education is looking to put together an activist anthology (an “actology” if you will) of art and writing by high school aged youth that take on and challenge the media. The working title for the project is “‘The Media is Not Fooling Me’: an Actology.

Interested? Here are the details:

We want you to put your fabulous critical lenses on and take a long hard look at the media and mass-produced images of “how people should be” in society. At the same time, we want you to share your own positive affirmations, images, and ideas that are alternatives to those currently being produced by the mainstream.

Be creative, be critical, be satiric, be political!

Some ideas to get the juices flowing : Do you love that song, but how it refers to women bugs you? Do you hate that TV commercial because it privileges certain beauty standards? Or how do you feel about the portrayal of particular communities by the six o’clock news? Maybe you love the Guerilla Girls and the way they challenge sexism and racism in art, film, politics, and culture? Maybe you don’t like how they do it, and here’s why! These are just some things you can talk about, write about, paint about, sing about - just remember to take on the issues that matter to you!

We are looking for works that are critical of the media from a self-aware perspective that takes into account power and sex/gender/sexuality/ race/class/ability.

We are looking for alternatives to the way the mainstream media sees/creates the world.

Who is being represented? How are they being represented? Who isn’t being seen or heard? Who is telling all the stories? Whose stories aren’t being told? What if you told these stories?

We are looking for: - Poetry - Essays - Short-stories - Rants - Monologues - Spoken word pieces - Songs - Drawings or sketches - Collages - Paintings - Photography - Photo-documentation of sculpture, large paintings, installations or performance pieces

Any other art/cultural production we may have missed in this list…

There is no limit to how many things you can submit, and all submissions are welcome. We ask that all text submissions be e-mailed in a Word or rich text format file, and all art and photographs be scanned and sent to us via e-mail. Audio and video files can be e-mailed as well. Please make sure that what you send are copies of your work and not originals. Please direct any questions and send all submissions to: missgactology@gmail.com and include your name and contact information so that we can notify you if your work will be included in the anthology.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS APRIL 25TH.
