We are absolutely delighted to announce the winners of Shameless Magazine’s first ever Talking Back Awards.

We received a bounty of excellent submissions, all of which were read anonymously by our three esteemed judges, Anupa Mistry, Emily Pohl-Weary and Souvankham Thammavongsa who selected two winners in each category: fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction.

A big thank-you to our sponsors: Fernwood Publishing, Groundwood Books, The Association of Canadian Publishers, Second Story Press, Anne McClelland, and Invisible Publishing. We couldn’t have done it without you!

FICTION

1st Place goes to Candice Wong for “Invictus”

2nd Place goes to Katherine Gladhart-Hayes for “Sat Me Down and Said”

POETRY

1st Place goes to Faith Paré for “Hunting Season”

2nd Place goes to Elizabeth Ouedraogo for her untitled poem

CREATIVE NON-FICTION

1st Place goes to Elizabeth Ouedraogo for “A Tree in the Red”

2nd Place goes to Victoria Chiu for “Crimson Beauty”

Congratulations winners! And THANK YOU to every single person who submitted work and supported the inaugural Talking Back Awards.
