Young Poets Master Classes and Workshops

Next month members and friends of Youth Poetry are gathering for a full day of free Master Classes and workshops with various established poets. Open to young Canadian poets aged 12 to 19; the meeting will take place in Toronto on Saturday, November 1st, 2008.

Although official registration closed October 22nd for poets visiting from out of town (with respect to sleeping arrangements), it is still possible to show up the day of the activity and partake in this friendly gathering, organized by members of and supported in part by the League of Canadian Poets ( and the Canada Council for the Arts. No costs are attached to any of the activities, except for meals with are left to the discretion of each participant.

SCHEDULE: Saturday, November 1st 2008

10 a.m. Welcome / MASTER CLASS - Writing, editing and translating poetry 90 minute Master Class with Beatriz Hausner Writing, editing, in various languages and translation. Session includes workshops and time for people to chat, write and exchange. (Master Poet Beatriz Hausner fluently speaks, reads and writes in English, French and Spanish).

11.30 a.m. Break Informal talks, exchange and informal readings if desired.

12.45 p.m. Lunch At nearby coffee/restaurant under the supervision of responsible adults within the group.

2 p.m. 2nd MASTER CLASS - All About Performance Poetry with Andrea Thompson 90 min Session to learn how to write for the stage. How does one play with sound, language, rhythms and beats of the Spoken Word tribe? Learn a few tricks from a professional wordsmith and get over stage freeze. Session includes a short poem presentation.

3.30 p.m. Break Break and relaxation.

5 p.m. Dinner Dinner somewhere close by. Other “adult” poets can join.

7 p.m. MASTER CLASS - Public Reading Hosting with Dwayne Morgan 90 min “crash-course” about how to prepare, organize and host public readings. Interactive practice about showcasing yourself and others. How should one interact with the audience and create a world of word travels? Session includes a few performed poems.

8.30 p.m. READING AND JAM NIGHT at nearby coffee house The evening is all ours to read our stuff, jam and create collective poems, LIVE if we want.

NOTE: Although this is an open public event, the microphone is primarily dedicated to young poets ages 12 to 19 until 11 p.m. MC: Elizabeth Robert welcomes poets of all language and origin to share their work, trilingual animation provided (English, French and Spanish). NO COVER FEE.
