The YWCA December 6 Fund is a non-interest-bearing loan fund for women leaving violent homes in the GTA and the region of Peel. Established in 1994 to commemorate the 14 women murdered at Montreal’s L’Ecole Polytechnique on Dec 6, 1989, the fund helps women and their children establish themselves in greater safety. Between April 2006 and March 2007, 102 women and 121 children accessed over $68,260 in loans. The purpose of the Fund is to help women make the transition from abusive situations to safety and self-reliance and to raise awareness about violence against women.
