Fourth Annual Shamie Awards Gala!

Wednesday, October 18, 2017

  • Time: 7:00pm – 12:00am
  • Location: Gladstone Hotel
  • Address: 1214 Queen Street West, Toronto, ON, Canada (map)
  • Accessibility: Wheelchair Accessible, ASL Interpretation, Gender-neutral Washrooms

Part comedic roast, part satirical awards show and 100% fundraiser, The Shamies are fictional awards presented to the worst perpetrators of problematic media. That’s right, for one night only, we’re calling out the most sexist, racist and oppressive forms of media and providing them their very own SHAMIE.

This year, we’ll be handing out awards for the “Best Man Tears,” which is exactly what you think it is! Plus, we’ll be handing out the award for “Most Egregious Use of People of Colour as Props in a Music Video.” We don’t know for sure, but maybe past nominee Macklemore can make a comeback! Or will Taylor Swift come in with the late-summer steal?

Your roast hosts for the evening will be comedian Nelu Handa (organizer of Yas Kween, a monthly comedy night for women of colour, and featured on the Baroness Von Sketch show) and our very own features editor and podcast host, Julia de Laurentiis Johnson.

We will also be celebrating the best new writers as we present the prizes for the third annual Talking Back Awards, judged by incredible authors Catherine Hernandez, Alicia Elliott and Canisia Lubrin and awarded to the top youth writers in fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Some of the winners will read from their works to help us celebrate youth writing.

This evening will feature excellent tunes by DJ Zehra and food provided with love from the Afghan Women’s Catering Group. Please note, this is a CASH BAR.

Help support our volunteer-run magazine for teen girls and trans youth. Every dollar we raise goes directly to funding Shameless magazine, helping fuel our mission to bring needed alternative voices to the media landscape.

To raise funds, we will have a silent auction with prizes and brands to be announced soon. If you would like to donate something, please contact ascriver@shamelessmag.com

This is a 19+ event being held in partnership with The Gladstone Hotel. Our venue is wheelchair accessible and offers gender neutral bathrooms.

If you need ASL interpretation, please contact ascriver@shamelessmag.com prior to October 9, 2017, to confirm.
