    Haircuts by Children UPDATE!

May 10th, 2006     by Melinda Mattos     Comments

So, the lovely Darren O’Donnell sent us some photos of the Haircuts by Children event that I blogged about a few days ago. Seeing the utter concentration in these kids’ faces is reassuring. I bet they’re fine hairdressers (apparently they were well trained beforehand). I’m still not going, mind you. I have too complicated a relationship with my hair. But I totally think you should go. Remaining dates: May 13, 20, 27 and 28. … READ MORE

As the press release says, “HAIRCUTS BY CHILDREN is a whimsical relational performance that playfully engages with the enfranchisement of children, with trust in the younger generation, and with the … READ MORE

One heck of an art exhibit

September 27th, 2005     by Melinda Mattos     Comments

Knitters take note: a Viennese art group called Gelatin recently unveiled the cutest public art installation we’ve ever seen. It’s a 200-foot-long pink toy bunny rabbit, knitted by dozens of grannies, located on the side of a mountain in Italy. What does the art “mean”? Your guess is as good as ours, but it sure looks snuggly. Members of Gelatin told Ananova.com they expect hikers to scale the bunny and lounge on its … READ MORE

We hate to be the ones to break this to you, but the holidays are coming up quick. Christmas, Hanukkah, Yule, Kwanzaa – you name it, it’s coming. “Sweet mother of pearl,” we hear you muttering to yourself, in quite an odd figure of speech. “What will I get the strong, smart, sassy teenage girl in my life?” Perhaps some of you are opting out of gift-giving this year. Fair enough. But for those of you … READ MORE

    Oh, what a night!

June 8th, 2004     by Melinda Mattos     Comments

A few months ago, our friend Andrew asked what our dream was for the Shameless launch party. He was going to help plan it, so he wanted to know what our ideal party would include, in terms of entertainment, decorations, atmosphere, etc. I thought about it for a second and then said, “Y’know, I just want to see a ton of teenage girls sitting on the floor of The 360 reading the magazine. That’s what … READ MORE

    The Last Word: Wife-beater

June 1st, 2004     by Melinda Mattos     Comments

Blame Avril Lavigne. No, she didn’t coin the phrase “wife-beater,” but she certainly increased its usage when she burst onto the pop scene in her trademark white undershirt and tie. The media just about slipped on its own slobber reporting the fashion trend she launched across the country. But why the heck did anyone start calling undershirts “wife-beaters” in the first place? It’s hard to say for sure. Most sources trace it back only as far … READ MORE
