Letter from the Editors (Issue 4)

October 1st, 2004     by Derek Hogue     Issue 4: Issue 4: The Comics issue     Comments

It’s hard to believe it has been four whole months already, but here we are with our second issue.

Launching Shameless was better than we ever dreamed possible. We’ve been in the media (Adbusters, Utne, CBC-Radio, Exclaim!, The Globe and Mail and La Presse, just to name a few). We’ve sold the magazine at events such as Ladyfest and Pride, as well as in bookstores all over Canada. Best of all, we’ve met and heard from girls across the country — and beyond!

Loads of you came out to our launch party in Toronto this past June. The club was packed by 9 p.m. Girls were sitting on the floor reading the magazine (reading! at a party!), dancing up a storm, performing onstage and radical cheerleading outside on Queen Street.

Many of you sent us letters and e-mails, some of which we reprinted on the next page. You told us you were thrilled to see a magazine that took teen girls seriously — one that gave you new projects and activities to try, tipped you off about cool Canadian women and featured the hot topics you’re interested in.

For Issue 2, we decided to tackle a subject that’s rarely discussed frankly when teenagers are involved: sex. With the help of Dr. Anne Katz (our new Body Politics columnist) and educator Ellen Kate Friedrichs, we’ve tried to give you straight-up info on sex (page 11) and to debunk some of the myths surrounding virginity (page 18). Check out The Last Word (page 48) for our own take on things. This issue also includes a DIY guide to papermaking (page 35), tips on how to handle trouble at work (page 26), and a profile of up-and-coming indie rockers Magneta Lane (page 40).

Before we go, we’d like to thank everyone who has made Issue 2 possible. Putting together a magazine is a big job. It takes a team of dedicated people willing to spend all of their free time writing stories, taking photographs, drawing illustrations, designing layouts, updating the website, selling ads, mailing out subscriptions, proofreading articles and having meeting after meeting. We think it’s worthwhile and hope you do, too.

Yours shamelessly, Melinda + Nicole
