August 7th, 2018     by Melanie Butler     Comments

Nathalie Younglai, Farah Merani and Gillian Müller are multi-talented media makers committed to changing the industry. Together, they are three-fourths of the producing team behind the queer Black superhero comedy Super Zee (The fourth, Jay Vaidya, was out making the next ground-breaking project at the time of our interview). In the first part of our conversation, we talked about the making of Super Zee and its all-POC crew. Here, they share insight about their careers, self-doubt and why you should ignore what people say about how to make it in showbiz. READ MORE

Meet the Super Women Behind Super Zee!

July 30th, 2018     by Melanie Butler     Comments

Super Zee is an action comedy about a queer Black superhero saving the world from microaggressions. The crew behind it is made up entirely of People of Colour. I had the privilege of talking about the show, the biz, and challenging what’s possible, with three of Super Zee’s four creators. (The fourth, writer-producer Jay Vaidya, was out working on the next ground-breaking project at the time of our interview.) READ MORE

Past, Present, Futures – Indigenous Futurism by Youth Filmmakers

November 18th, 2017     by Jackie Mlotek     Comments

The only way to survive is to imagine futures, but it’s even better to create them. Visualizing futures is power. Giving shape to future worlds that aren’t separate from the past, but inextricable to them is what can get us through. This is the gift the young filmmakers at imagiNATIVE explored through their films. imagiNATIVE is an annual film festival held in Toronto every October. imagiNATIVE’s vision is about showcasing, promoting, and celebrating Indigenous film and … READ MORE

Trust Your Audience and Write Well: Roxane Gay on Writing

August 29th, 2017     by Lauren Kirshner     Comments

Last month I saw Roxane Gay in an on-stage interview in Toronto, where she was discussing her newest book Hunger, a powerful memoir about trauma and living in an “unruly body.” Gay was fascinating, moving, smart, and funny (as her work always is). As a creative writing teacher, I was especially excited when Gay talked about how she approaches writing. Early on in the interview, Gay discussed one of the most important decisions a writer must … READ MORE

Too Depressed to go to Class Today: Surviving Academia With Depression

May 3rd, 2017     by Farrah Kabeer     Comments

Being depressed can feel like being stuck in a deep hole where no one can hear your screams. For me, it was not showering for 3 weeks, forgetting to brush my teeth, staying in bed for days, lying in filth, not cleaning my room. Clothes all over the floor, eating too much, eating too little, sleeping too much, not sleeping at all. Being depressed was constantly dealing with the thought that I would be better off dead. It was several hospitalizations. It was feeling worthless. It was missing school for weeks. It was feeling as if I did not have any friends or that nobody loved me. It was feeling as if I did not matter to anyone. Being depressed was living in my own hell on earth. READ MORE

    14 Days of Nihilistic Thinking

November 11th, 2015     by Denise Reich     Comments

September 2015 was rough for me. I saw a lot of doctors and went for a lot of tests. Every procedure yielded another diagnosis or piece of troubling information. At one point I joked that I felt as though I were going trick-or-treating to the doctors’ offices, and they were handing me trick after trick. I was grateful that they were taking things seriously and getting answers; I was disheartened that there were so many answers to find. READ MORE

Four Things Never to Say to (this) Chronically Ill Friend

March 30th, 2015     by Denise Reich     Comments

Since autumn, I’ve been home with a serious viral illness. There’s a lot I could write about my experience: the endless battles with my HMO for appropriate care; how much I’m really envying citizens of countries with universal health care; the indifferent doctors; my fears about my condition. Fortunately, many friends and family members have been very supportive of me. Unfortunately, not everyone has been helpful. It’s led me to compile this list of the top four things they’ve said to completely piss me off. READ MORE

Advice Column: Showing up and Loving Boundaries Supporting Friends with Long Term Depression

March 21st, 2014     by Sarah Mangle     Comments

We received a request to do a video blog responding to the question, “How do you support your friends who are in longterm crisis, and how do you make sure you have good boundaries with yourself?” So, it’s a bit of a difficult topic, and a serious topic. I’m not going to talk about any extreme – I’m not going to talk about extreme – suicide, or sexual abuse, for example, but this still could be triggering for some people, depending on what your triggers are. So it’s important to be aware of that. READ MORE

Advice Column: Imagining New Strategies in Dating, Crushes and Gossip

June 12th, 2013     by Sarah Mangle     Comments

I once had a partner who had multiple disabilities while I was able-bodied. He came from a more working-class background than me. While being his partner, I worried that I didn’t really understand enough about his physical conditions, or how not to be ableist. I worried I would say ableist things in conversation with him or other people, not realizing I was being ableist in that moment. I worried that I would assume he needed … READ MORE
