May 13th, 2011     by Julia Horel     Comments

Your Shameless mag has been featured in an article in This Magazine by Jessica Leigh Johnston, outgoing features editor at Shameless and forever friend. It’s not exactly Seventeen, and that’s the whole point – or at least it was. “When we started, we defined ourselves as what we aren’t,” explains Sheila Sampath, the magazine’s editorial director. “Now, we no longer have to do that. It’s more about what we are.” Check out the whole article online … READ MORE

    Spring Issue on the Press!

May 3rd, 2011     by Sheila Sampath     Comments

This March marked the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day. To honour the occasion, The Globe and Mail’s Margaret Wente got her hate on and wrote a scathing letter to Canadian feminists. The message: it’s 2011 and feminism is irrelevant. Get over it! Shameless blogger Emma Woolley fought back. On our newly re-launched and fresh-faced blog, she brought forth the kind of sass that does us proud – the smart, articulate kind – the kind that … READ MORE

    Meet Max ...

April 20th, 2011     by Max Mosher     Comments

My name is Max Mosher. I am a gay man. I am also a feminist. These identities are not mutually exclusive, although sometimes they are treated as such. Too many queer men think the struggle for women’s rights has nothing to do with them, and some are shockingly misogynistic. Conversely, queer men have been accused of ignoring the contributions of lesbian feminists to the gay rights movement, of discriminating against trans people, of glamorizing outdated gender roles … READ MORE

    Meet Shoshana!

April 18th, 2011     by Shoshana Erlich     Comments

Hey Everyone! I’m Shoshana and it is super exciting to be joining everyone in the conversation happening here at Shameless! I’m going to be talking about disability and the many ways that it plays out in all of our lives. I have been disabled for most of my life, but I’m still pretty new to the disabled community. For me it is really interesting how even though I’ve been able to fall under the disability umbrella in terms … READ MORE

April 13th, 2011     by Naz Afsahi     Comments

Hello! My name is Naz Afsahi and I am so excited to be joining Shameless as a blogger. My Shameless column will deal primarily with issues related to race and representation, and trans rights. The idea is to alternate between these two topics, but if a pressing issue arises on either topic, this schedule may change. My interest in the above topics arises from my personal life experiences and the people who have helped to shape who … READ MORE

    Meet Shaunta . . .

April 11th, 2011     by Shaunta Grimes     Comments

When I was a kid growing up in the 1980s in a pretty severely messed up family there was one place where I reliably found peace. The swimming pool. Water made everything go away for a couple of hours every afternoon as I swam my laps and worked with my coach to get faster and stronger. It didn’t really matter that the rest of my world was falling apart. I was an athlete, and in that one … READ MORE

April 6th, 2011     by Meg Pirie     Comments

Hey y’all! My name is Meg Pirie and I’m so excited to shamelessly get my blog on with such a wonderful publication. My Shameless column’s primary focus is labour, especially as it pertains to gender. Why, you ask? Well, I’ve had a series of jobs that have varied widely (babysitter, tutor, gift wrapper, customer service representative, server, LEGO instructor at after school workshop … you name it). While the type and length of employment varied, 98% … READ MORE

    New issue out soon!

December 7th, 2010     by Sheila Sampath     Comments

Earlier this year, we released a new mandate and, with it, we sent out a call: we are Shameless, and we are putting together a team of people devoted to grassroots publishing, each with a commitment to antioppression and inclusive feminist politics; each with time, vision and a desire to work many (many) hours to bring this unapologetic alternative magazine to young women and trans youth. Three times a year. Admittedly, it was a tall order. … READ MORE
