Magic Mike Likes It Big
Just watched Magic Mike XXL with my bestie, and have to say that I was very disappointed. The plot was very weak, loose and didn’t follow that well. I couldn’t for the life of me explain or justify what happens in the film during the parts where there aren’t sexy men dancing for a crowd, but I did think to myself as I left the theatre that big women were quite the focus of the film and perhaps even inspired the title. Throughout the film, I noticed big women making appearances—in line to get into the clubs with their friends, or sitting on the couches watching the acts, or dancing with their friends. READ MORE

Q & A with Sabrina Ramnanan
Toronto writer Sabrina Ramnanan’s debut novel, Nothing Like Love (Random House), follows a cast of Trinidadian villagers through one summer month filled with hijinks and humour. The novel’s protagonist, an eighteen-year-old girl named Vimla, unwittingly finds herself at the centre of attention after being caught frolicking in the mangrove trees with Krishna, the village pundit’s son. Scandal ensues, and, in the process of dealing with the shame-mongers and a broken heart, Vimla ends up discovering what it is she actually wants. READ MORE

If there is one thing that is for sure on ABC’s hit TV show, Scandal, it is that Olivia Pope is one of the bravest people ever. She is brave not only because of the daily struggles that she negotiates everyday as one of the most powerful fictional women in US politics, but also because of the strength that she displays in dealing with her father, Rowan Pope, a source of toxicity in her life. She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry: An Inside Out Perspective
Did you know that this year was Inside Out Film Festival’s 25th Anniversary? The long running LGBT festival took place from May 21-31, screening all of its films at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. I was lucky to catch a few films during the 10-day queer/trans movie extravaganza. I plan on reporting back on the films that I watched, sharing my reviews with Shameless readers, starting with the premiere of She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry. READ MORE

Why the Jem Trailer makes me sad
When I learned that a film about Jem and the Holograms was in the works, I was apprehensive. I did, however, vow to give the Jem movie a chance. That went out the window the moment I saw the trailer. The new film has seemingly removed every single aspect of what made Jem so special and empowering for young girls, from the bright colours on down. Was the original show perfect? Not at all. It did, however, deserve better than it seems to have received. READ MORE

The Mayweather Spectacle: What the ‘Fight of the Century’ Tells Us About Violence Against Women
On May 2, 2015 McCarran airport became “the richest runway in the world” as roughly 100 private planes totaling $1.5 billion in value lined the Las Vegas airport tarmac, wing to wing. The event that drew unprecedented crowds, temporarily closing the airport, was the Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao fight at the MGM Grand. The match, with a record number audience of 400 million and a $300 million payout, was dubbed “The Fight of the Century.” Pacquiao is an eight-division world champion. Mayweather is the undefeated, five-division world champion with eleven world titles. He is also a known abuser. READ MORE

Catcall for What?
The “Catcall for What?” music video was sparked by a group of young women of colour sharing their experiences of being harassed on the street. In this video, young women of colour reframe sexual harassment: the perpetrators of catcalling are no longer the focal point of the story; rather, it’s the strong women who are taking a stand and adding some fun to it (with stuffed cats) who really tell the story. American Horror Story: Ableism, Voyeurism and Popular Culture
On October 8, 2014 the fourth season of American Horror Story, Freak Show, premiered. The season aired for four months, concluding on January 21, 2015. The trailer’s (watch here) opening line speaks to the tangible ways in which ableism - any form of discrimination or social prejudice against Persons with Disabilities (PWD) - and voyeurism - the fervent observation of sensational subjects, typically from a distance or secret vantage point - continually intertwine to reinforce the cultural subjugation of bodies that fall outside normative conventions.
